  Coach

Here are some basic skills and playing principles that every coach can work on with their team.

Federation of International Touch has a number of Coaching qualifications.

From the entry level Community Coaching Award to the Federation of International Touch Level 2, required for our International coaches.

In the longer term, Touch Nederland also wants to give Coach courses in the Netherlands.

As soon as more is known about this, it will be communicated via the website.

But for now there are plenty of sources to gain information elsewhere to take a look at the field of Coaching.

Game overview

The main objective of the game is for each team to score Try's and prevent the opponent from scoring (One try equals one point). Teams consist of 6 players on the field at any time, with up to 8 substitutes on the sidelines. Teams are divided into men's, women's and mixed divisions (mixed = 3 male + 3 female players). Players can switch at any time during the game and as often as they want.

Teams are either attacking (when they have possession of the ball) or defending (when they are trying to prevent the other team from scoring). Attacking players must perform a 'Roll Ball' (between the legs) once they have been touched by a defender.

Defenders must retreat in a straight line 7 meters from the 'Roll Ball' marker. After 6 Touches, possession of the ball is transferred to the other team and it is the defending team's turn to attack. Penalties are awarded for a variety of offenses including: Forward Pass, Offside, Touch-and-Pass, Off the mark and Over-force play.

General game principles

During the attack

The aim of the game is to score more tries than the opponent; this is achieved by moving to the try line. Sometimes it can be tactically advantageous to move to the sideline, so that there is more space for further attacking play.

While defending

When defending, try to deprive your opponents of time and space by moving forward and making the touch. The faster you move up the attacking team, the less progress they will make towards your try line

Support the ball carrier at all times

Close support of the ball carrier offers more attacking options and means that possession of the ball can be retained. Close support also means that no ground has to be lost because the ball has to be passed far back to a teammate. Remember that a direct lateral pass is allowed and can often be the most effective pass.

Exchange as many players as possible

A new set of legs on the field can mean the difference between winning and losing. Make sure to switch your players during the attack and near the substitution box. Once you score a touchdown, it's good to bring in a whole new group of players to keep the intensity up.

Core Skills

Touch

A Touch can be made on any part of the person, clothing or the ball.

After a Touch has been performed, the player in possession of the ball must stop (possibly returning to the Mark where the Touch occurred if the Mark is crossed) and perform a Roll Ball.

After being touched 6 times, the ball goes to the other team.

If a Touch is deemed too strong, a Penalty (Hard Touch) will be awarded to the offending team.

The Dummy Half (the person who picks up the ball after the ball has been dumped) may not be touched or scored while in possession of the ball.

If the Dummy Half get's touched with the ball or scores, possession of the ball passes to the opponent, who will resume play with a Roll Ball.

Roll Ball

The Roll Ball is accomplished by the attacking player positioning himself on the mark, facing the defenders' scoring line, standing parallel to the sideline and rolling the ball backwards along the ground between his feet. If the ball is rolled more than 1 meter, a penalty is awarded to the opponent.

Penalty

If someone is assessed a Penalty, their team must retreat 10 meters. A Penalty is taken by: a Tap Ball.

Passing

A 'Forward Pass' occurs when the ball is passed in front of the player who had possession of the ball. In this situation the ruling will be a Penalty.

A 'Touch and Pass' occurs when the person being touched then passes the ball. Once again the verdict will be a Penalty

Offside / Offside

A defensive player is offside if the player does not walk 7 meters back to the marker indicated by the referee and then touches the attacking player.
